Following the success of the Devon 999 Live Emergency Service Day in 2016, organisers decided to hold the event again to give people a better understanding of how each service operates.
Many local emergency services attended the Emergency Services Day in Kingsbridge Town Square to demonstrate to the public the work that they do.
It was a successful turnout for the event on June 23, with local emergency services in attendance such as the Prawle Point Coastguard, Kingsbridge Police, Devon Freewheelers - Blood Bikes, RNLI Lifeguards, Devon Cave Rescue, Prawle Point National Coast Watch Institute and local community first responders.
NCI Prawle Point posted on Facebook: “We enjoyed the 999 Emergency Services event on the Kingsbridge Quay. Thanks to Josh Garner and the CRT team for organising it - such a worthwhile day.
“Thanks to Rachel Ellis, people manager, and Justyna Tweddle, PI and cash manager, from Morrisons who supplied us all with donuts and tea/coffee. The Creeks End supplied the bacon butties!”
From the Kingsbridge Police, PSCO Warren Palmer, PCSO Ashley Hawkes and PC Ryan Hayhurst attended the event with the large police van completely kitted out with the uniform and equipment to ensure a presence from local police.
Youngsters took a great advantage of the police presence, trying on uniform, experiencing being locked up in the cell in the van and talking to the officers about their roles in the community.
Force incident manager Tracy Sharam said: “Being visible and present in the community is our priority and we are continually striving to innovate around how we can best deliver our services.
Our presence also encouraged one member of the public to hand in an unwanted air weapon and we actively encourage anyone else to do the same with unwanted weapons. Keeping weapons away from vulnerable people is imperative in fighting crime and reducing violence.”
PSCO Palmer said: “It was a very well attended event and at times very busy. We look forward to meeting our communities at the Challaborough Blue Light event coming soon, date to be confirmed. I would also like to extend my huge thanks to Morrisons and The Creeks End for providing much needed refreshment for all 999 staff.”
Paul O’dwyer posted on Facebook: “Really great event and very well organised. The little one loved it!”
