THE Friends of Salcombe Lifeboats hosting a crabbing competition to mark Lifeboat SOS Day, coinciding with Salcombe Crabfest.

The competition will take place on Victoria Quay and Custom House Quay, both in the middle of Salcombe, between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Sunday, May 1.

The competition will be open to entrants in three age groups, five to eight, nine to twelve and 13 to 15-year-olds. An adult or a responsible family member must accompany all entrants under the age of 12.

Prizes will be awarded to the entrants who catch the most crabs in each of the three age groups. Prizes will be to the value of £10 in the form of a voucher to be spent in the RNLI Salcombe shop.

Entrants will have half an hour at a time in which to catch as many crabs as they can, using an authorised and approved crabbing kit. Entrants who do not already have such a kit may purchase one as part of their entry.

Entry charge is £5 for the first session, to include a crabbing kit, or £2 if you have your own. Additional half-hour sessions will cost £2.

To take part in the crabbing, simply come to the quay, register at the desk and start crabbing. A full set of simple rules will be provided for each entrant and the judges’ decision will be final.

All crabs that are caught must be handled carefully and with respect, and returned to the water after each session. All proceeds of the event will go towards running the Salcombe RNLI lifeboats.
