Well-known author, historian and broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis was the special guest at the opening of a new exhibition at the Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum entitled ‘William Cookworthy: Pioneer of Porcelain’.
Fifty invited guests gathered at the museum for a preview of the exhibition, which charts the life and times of this celebrated son of Kingsbridge.
The museum’s curatorial team, headed by curatorial assistant Holly Trubshawe, have been working hard over the winter months preparing the exhibition, in partnership with Plymouth History Centre.
The museum in Plymouth has loaned more than 100 pieces of its Cookworthy Porcelain, which is on display along with a history of porcelain in the UK.
Mr Hart-Davis was welcomed by museum chairman Anne Balkwill and gave a short speech about William Cookworthy and how important he was in the development of porcelain in the 18th century.
Mr Hart-Davis encouraged everyone to come and see the new exhibition and warmly praised the museum as a whole.
“I’d forgotten what a wonderful museum it is,” Mr Hart-Davis said, before tucking into a cream tea along with the other guests.
The museum, which is housed in the Old Grammar School at the top of Fore Street, is now open for the season, from Monday to Saturday, between 10.30am and 5pm.
