Kingsbridge District Guiding is in need of leaders and volunteers throughout the area.
The role includes helping girls aged five to 10 build their confidence, ensuring girls and young women are given a space to challenge gender stereotypes, going on adventures and learning new skills, and much more.
By volunteering at unit meetings you’ll run activities, games, projects and events that give girls the chance to discover their potential, learn about the world around them and earn badges and awards.
If you’d like to become a leader of a guiding group, you’ll be supported to complete their leadership qualification, with training on everything from planning your programme to child safety.
These roles are good if you want to join or start a unit; can support girls on a weekly basis - giving you the opportunity to see them grow and develop
are happy to get stuck in - you’ll be helping girls with a range of exciting, adventurous and often messy activities; seek a highly rewarding role where you’ll develop great relationships with your team and girls.
In addition to providing a ‘girl only’ space for young members, one of the main aims is to ensure their young members have female role models in leadership within girlguiding.
In order to support this, roles such as unit leader, can only be undertaken by female members. While some roles are restricted to only being held by women, adult males (18+) are welcome to join the charity in a variety of other volunteer roles.
District commissioner Sarah Stephens said being a leader is “fantastic”.
“I’ve learnt so much through my guiding experiences,” she said.
She also said guiding has recently evolved with all new “exciting” badges for inventing, helping with charities, and aviation, to name a few.
You can choose to work with girls in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Rangers. The roles that currently need filling the most are Stokenham Rainbows, who meet on Thursday at Chillington from 4-5.30pm; and the 1st Kingsbridge Brownies who also meet on a Thursday night from 5-6.30pm.
