Wembury Primary School’s Foundation and Key Stage One building has been officially opened.

Meadow Rise was named by former head teacher Susie Evans who was instrumental in bringing about the new build.

She was treated to songs and thanks from the children before she cut the ribbon along with Sir Gary Streeter MP.

Three members of the governing body Mark Oliver, Sheila Jenkins and Linda Watts came along to the opening along with CEO Rob Haring, Estates Director Mark Bullard, Devon County Counci Leader Councillor John Hart and Chris and Tim from Bailey’s Partnership.

The modular eco-building was constructed by TG Escapes and work began last January along with the lockdown. It includes three new classrooms and a natural decking area. The children were actually able to use the facilities from May last year. The new Foundation children have settled in well and it’s thought the new facilities will last for at least fifty years.

Acting Headteacher Lyn Chamberlain said: “Wembury Primary has always prided itself on being a warm, nurturing environment with high aspirations across the curriculum and our fabulous staff ensure that each individual is valued and supported to develop their interests and talents with a focus on nurturing a ‘love of learning’ for life. This new development is a valuable contribution to our pupils’ journey.

We are already exceptionally lucky to have our very own swimming pool and outstanding grounds (which encompass a large community orchard) but the addition of the new building has enhanced the children’s environment even further and has benefitted all children through the freeing up of existing spaces. There is a new garden being developed for the children to work on, our fantastic music provision is now located within a permanent, large music room (previously a classroom), Foundation have an enhanced outdoor play area and Key Stage One has a much larger playground! We really are delighted with the outcome for our amazing pupils and for the long term benefit to our community.” Wembury Primary is part of the Westcountry Schools Trust.
