Tips on how to live life with reduced plastic waste was given to people in a talk at THE ÜNIT by Less Plastic’s Amanda Keetley.

Michelle McQuinn of THE ÜNIT at South Hams Business Park, Churchstow, called the event a “fun and informal get together for families” - where Amanda gave some “invaluable tips on how to live and shop using less plastic”.

There was also activities for children, including face painting, origami and bracelet making, alongside coffee and cake.

Michelle said: “We also launched our ‘Emergency Mug Wall’ to encourage customers to use a mug from the wall instead of a take away cup. This is all in light of the recent latte levy where customers will potentially be charged for using single-use takeaway cups, which are generally lined with plastic and one billion of which end up in landfill every year.

“At THE ÜNIT customers can use one from the wall instead - then pop it back next time they are in. More and more people are now buying reusable cups which is great - we also sell them at THE UNIT and when customers bring one into use we give them 25p off their coffee.”

Less Plastic have also just recently launched a hospitality training and marketing pack for businesses to enable them to use less plastic in the workplace, and Amanda Keetley said: “It was a really lovely morning, and great to see the new funky café/studio/creative space at THE ÜNIT in person.

“We are working with hospitality businesses to help them use less plastic with initiatives that reduce the need for single-use plastic such as the Emergency Mug wall.

“Later that day Less Plastic ran a beach clean in collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage at Strete Gate, Slapton Sands. Around 60 people came along and helped remove lots of plastic off the beach.”
