A GEOGRAPHY teacher at Kingsbridge Community College has been volunteering for ShelterBox for more than ten years, and a local event is supporting them.
ShelterBox is a UK charity based in Helston, Cornwall, which sends out emergency shelter and vital supplies in a specially designed utility box to areas of the world affected by natural disasters.
Lizzy Treglown-Ryan, from Moreleigh, has been deployed to countries such as China in 2008, The Philippines in 2010, Paraguay in 2015 and recently Sri Lanka last year, during her decade of volunteering for the charity.
She regularly gives talks about her experiences to local groups and this has inspired some local fundraising over the last few months.
The 6th Kingsbridge Sea Scouts have nearly raised the £600 for a ShelterBox which, thanks to a unique reference number, they will be able to track to its ultimate destination overseas.
Following a talk at the February meeting of the Moreleigh and Halwell WI, local member Angela Luckhurst, together with family members, Martyn and Imogen, is organising a Shine for ShelterBox Candlelit Meal and Silent Auction of Promises at the Sixth Form Centre at KCC on Saturday, March 25. The aim is to raise £1,000 in one evening to purchase two ShelterBoxes.
Donations have already been received from local businesses including Soar Mill Cove Hotel, W J Walters-Symons and Sons, Island Street Bar and Grill, Maha-bharat Restaurant, Will Power Fitness, Pizza Planet, The Tower Inn, Peter Betteridge, Hair Advice Centre, The Oyster Shack, Alice Blount Garden Design and Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream.
