LAST Sunday saw Salcombe’s annual civic service and lunch pay tribute to the ‘league of helpers and volunteers who dedicate so much time and effort’ to the community.

The service was held at Holy Trinity church and taken by Father Daniel French. This was followed by the civic lunch at the Harbour Hotel.

Town mayor Mike Fice said: ‘Every year, we invite representatives of various organisations around the town, to thank people who give something back to Salcombe.’

The lunch included a presentation to the citizen of the year, awarded to Tim Mattocks for his dedication to the Salcombe Minibus.

Cllr Fice said: ‘This year, Tim’s put an awful lot of effort into changing the status of the committee to that of a charitable incorporated organisation - ensuring it can continue for years to come.

‘Salcombe Minibus is a vital lifeline to many in the community, and Tim’s role has been recognised by many people in the town.

‘He was nominated by ten people, and the nomination was specifically for all the time and effort he puts into ensuring the Salcombe Minibus runs in such an efficient way.’

The town council also presented a framed photograph by Nick Philbedge to the Salcombe’s former road-sweeper, Chad Benson, for 16 and a half years’ service to the town.

The local organisations who accepted invitations to the lunch were Cliff House Trust, Salcombe Estuary Rowing Club, Friends of Cliff House Woods, Friends of Redfern Health Centre, Friends of Salcombe Library, Gardening Group at Council Parking Space, Holy Trinity Church, Island Cruising Club, Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, Regatta Committee, Salcombe and Malborough Flower Club, Salcombe Brownies, Rainbows, Beehives and Guides, Young Salcombe Centre, Salcombe Christmas Lights Group, Salcombe Football Club, Salcombe History Society, Salcombe Maritime Museum, Salcombe Minibus, Salcombe Over 60s Club, Salcombe Players, Salcombe Pre School Committee, Salcombe RNLI Lifeboat, Salcombe Rotary, Salcombe Rugby Club, Salcombe Sea Anglers Club, Salcombe Tennis Club, Swimming Pool Association, the Women’s Institute and WRVS luncheon club.

Also invited were all the previous citizens of the year, along with all town, district and county councillors who represent the town.
