A new map showing locations where you can best avoid single-use and disposable plastics has been launched.
The founders of Salcombe’s Plastic Clever campaign have created an illustrated map of the Kingsbridge and Salcombe estuary with tips on how to avoid disposable plastics.
The dynamic duo, Anna Turns and her daughter, six-year-old Ella, worked closely with local artist Kate West, and together they designed the map of the estuary that includes many of the businesses already signed up to the Plastic Clever campaign, which is part of the Kids Against Plastic initiative.
They have printed 5,000 copies of the map which are to be distributed at schools, the Salcombe Tourist Information Centre, holiday homes across town, and more than 20 businesses participating in the Plastic Clever initiative.
They will also be distributing them at events, with the first being Salcombe Crabfest, where the pair will have a stall to raise awareness about single-use plastics.
The free maps have been funded by generous sponsors, including the Venus Company, who run local beach cafes in East Portlemouth, Bigbury-on-Sea and further afield. Others include the Plastic Company based at Torr Quarry near Kingsbridge, where recycled plastics are made into picnic benches, decking boards and outdoor play equipment.
Ella said: “We’re excited to be handing out these maps to lots of people, as they include lots of ‘plastic clever’ tips on the back. We hope it will encourage everyone to visit some of our favourite plastic-clever cafes and restaurants that don’t serve plastic straws anymore, for example.”
If you look closely, Anna and Ella are featured on the map on their paddleboard. The reason being on June 8 and 9, they will be paddling 22 miles, covering the entire estuary, collecting litter as they go to raise awareness of ocean pollution and to highlight how microplastics come to accumulate up the creeks.
