Thurlestone Primary School’s deputy head of school, Jan Bosence will be attempting to complete one of the largest obstacle courses in the world next month.
Mr Bosence will be travelling to the Rat Race Dirty Weekend at Burghley near Stamford, Lincolnshire on Saturday, May 6, to raise money for two charities – Children with Cancer UK and CLIC Sargent.
The course is 20 miles long, with 200 different obstacles, including the official longest monkey bars in the world.
Children with Cancer UK is the race organisers’ official charity. If he can raise £500, the organisers will refund him his £150 entry fee, which he can then put back into the pot.
Mr Bosence said: “The reason that I’m raising for CLIC Sargent is because two years ago my nephew Freddie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
“It all happened while my brother and his wife were on their honeymoon, it got cut very short.
“They all rushed to Bristol Children’s Hospital where they began treatment on Freddie.
“CLIC Sargent supplied my brother’s family with amazing accommodation for all three of them and free taxis to the hospital. They made a truly awful time much more bearable.”
“I expect that the course will be ridiculous,” Mr Bosence continued.
“I’ve done some of these type of events before and the atmosphere from the competitors is one of encouragement, the mood is very much ’us against the course’ so I’m sure I’ll get around.
“I’m doing it with my little brother too, so I’ll never let him do better than me!
“That said, it is the largest obstacle course race in the world so I expect I’ll be hobbling a bit the day after!
“I’ve never run that far in my life!” Mr Bosence added
