The popular House Band, The Martin Dale Trio will be playing this weekend.

On Saturday night, The Flavel Jazz Club will return with a specially invited guest trumpeter, Martin Shaw.

Martin is regarded as one of the top jazz soloists in the country, playing in a wide variety of settings from big band to quartet, from cutting edge jazz to contemporary pop and funk.

He started to play the trumpet at the age of 11 and within a few years he was working with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the same time as gigging informally throughout the Midlands with his jazz pianist father.

In 1985, Martin got a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London to study classical and jazz trumpet, before he went on to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

As a freelance artist, Martin has worked with most of the leading jazz artists of the last 30 years including Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Pete King, Dick Morrisey and Tim Garland.

His Big Band work includes the BBC Big Band, currently led by trombonist Jiggs Whigham and recently, the Michelle Legrand Jazz Orchestra.

Alongside session and TV work, Martin still finds the time to perform with classical ensembles and in West End shows and to add to the list, he has also recorded with some of the biggest rock/pop acts around including Sting, Jamiroquai and Natalie Cole.

A representative from the Flavel in Dartmouth said: “We are so excited to have this stunning musician at the top of his game joining our regular band performance this weekend.

“We’ll be pushing back our usual seating and setting out circular tables for an evening of sophisticated entertainment. It should be a night to remember.”

The performance will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 7.30pm at the Flavel.
