TWO ex-Kingsbridge Community College students tied the knot in August after meeting while working at Salcombe Boat Store.

Laura Catherine Squire, a doctor, and Simon Robin Evans, a research scientist, were married at Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe, on Saturday, August 27, by Father Daniel French.

Laura, daughter of Andrew and Sheila Squire of Grafton Road, Salcombe, first met Simon, son of Sheila Evans of Main Road Salcombe and Peter Evans of Victoria, Australia, while they were working holiday jobs at Salcombe Boat Store.

Both keen rowers, Simon later saw Laura rowing and told his brother ‘that’s who I’m going to marry’. After they got together, Simon proposed by arranging for signal flags to be flown during Salcombe Yacht Club’s New Year’s Day race spelling out ‘Laura will you marry me’.

He had the ring in the boat, and it was so windy they then capsized and broke the mast of the Merlin Rocket they were in.

Laura was given away by her father Andrew Squire, and was attended by sister Emily Squire, friend and brother’s girlfriend Rosie Yeoward, and school friends Karen Hole and Kimberly McNicholl as bridesmaids.

Simon chose friend Tom Moulsdale as his best man, while his brother James Evans, Laura’s bothers Tristram and Oli Squire, and friends Adam Addis, Andrew Biffen, Richard Merrill and Rupert Scott acted as ushers.

The Salcombe Gospel Choir, of which both the bride and groom’s mothers are members, performed at the ceremony, as did organist Trevor Becker who played Laura’s favourite piano piece for her entrance.

Andrew Biffen performed a reading and Oli Squire read a comedy poem he had written himself.

After the reception, Laura and Simon rowed from Salcombe to South Sands en route to the reception at East Soar Farm.

Flowers were provided by Twig of Salcombe, catering by Claire’s Kitchen, and the ceilidh by Blue Jewel. Luna Weddings provided the wedding photography.

They spent their honeymoon touring the Amalfi Coast, Southern Italy, on a tandem bike.

Laura attended Kingsbridge Community College and then Oxford University, and Simon attended Kingsbridge Community College, Plymouth College and Cambridge University. They are now living in Zurich where Simon works at Zurich University and Laura is currently studying Swiss-German to be able to practice medicine in Switzerland.
