Two South Brent Judo Club members made the long journey to the London International Open at the University of East London at the end of May.
The event attracted over 350 judoka from Georgia, Germany and the Netherlands as well as the home nations. Both players rose to the challenge and conducted themselves brilliantly.
First on to the mat was Tom Smith (U66kg) cadet. Tom won three fights, all by ippon which took him to the final. Tom fought well and won a silver in his only his second competition at U66kg against strong opposition. Next up was Kolya Schwinge (U73kg) Kolya won two fights by ippon and lost one so won a fantastic bronze in a group crammed with England players.
Meanwhile, Maddox Callard was the lone SBJC player at the Patchway competition, Bristol. Maddox fought well and won two fights and made it to the final which he narrowly lost. So a well-deserved silver for Maddox.
